ABOUT VIETNAMESE LACQUER PAINTING :

Lacquer is a special medium of Vietnamese Fine art. Lacquer traditional comes in 3 colors :brown �black and vermilion. By the 1930s, artists started to use a new technique known as chiseling which give a richer mix of colors and added sense of size and distance. The painting is done on wood. To create a painting ,first step, the artist has to make a base.

The base experiences many complicated but interesting process such as be filled by a mixing of silt , sawdust and nature lacquer then smoothes it with sandpaper. Then it is soaked in water to remove any bubbles that may burst under the lacquer once it is painted. It is dried, then painted layer of lacquer, dried again, and sanded once more. Do these steps about 10 times until the base look smoothest. After polishing , this gives a smooth black surface with a brilliant luster. Next step, he painter use hot lacquer top draw the outline of a picture and the color are applied one by one , layer upon layer. Each coat dries slowly in the appropriated temperature.

The finishing touches consist of polishing, washing the picture. This process may seem like brutal treatment for a work of art . but it�s done with a great care. This leaves a brilliant surface on a painting. Nowadays , besides lacquer paint is a main material, the artist use more various mediums such as golden leaves, gold inlaid , silver dust, egg shells, mother of pearl, but making artworks by traditional method is never change. The additional materials help the modern artists to express themselves fully and add creativity and individuality of style to their art works.
